Zenyatta and Curlin are heavy favorites in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic and the Breeders’ Cup Classic respectively. The two Classics are the highlights of a 14-race slate spread over two days with $25.5 million in purses up for grabs.

Zenyatta is a perfect 8-for-8 in her career, and if she makes it nine straight against the girls while Curlin struggles on Santa Anita’s synthetic Pro Ride surface in the $5 million Classic, there’s a chance she could ruin Curlin’s shot at becoming the first horse since Cigar in the mid-1990s to win consecutive Horse of the Year awards.

Curlin will try to add to his legacy as one of flat racing’s all-time greats when he attempts to duplicate his victory of last year at rain-soaked Monmouth Park as the Breeders’ Cup 2008 moves to the synthetic track at Santa Anita in sunny Southern California.

Zenyatta is the overwhelming 3-5 favorite in the Ladies Classic and Curlin drew the No. 9 post and was made the early favorite at 7-5. Click here to check out Breeders’ Cup betting odds on other contenders.

Breeders' Cup post position drawPost positions have been set for the 25th running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Curlin drew post position 9 in the Breeders Cup 2008 Classic. Breeders’ Cup odds on each horse will be added as they become available. Here’s the full field:

    Arnold Schwarzenegger
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced he will attend the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park on October 25, and he will become the first California governor to ever present the winner’s trophy for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

“We are extremely pleased that Gov. Schwarzenegger has chosen to attend and present the trophy for the biggest race in North America,” said Sherwood Chillingworth, Oak Tree Director and executive vice president.

“I think the governor recognizes the importance of the thoroughbred industry here in California, and his presence on October 25 does, indeed, lend a great deal of prestige to the event.”

Curlin won the Breeders’ Cup Classic last year at Monmouth Park. He is running for the Classic this year again to defend his title. He is a favorite and the Breeders’ Cup odds on Curlin is 1/2 from Bodog Racebook.

Here are 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic results and payouts.

The injury ended the hope that Big Brown would face 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25. After running six furlongs on turf at Aqueduct, the thoroughbred was found to have damaged a heel bulb - an area of soft tissue - at the back of his right front foot. It is a big disappointment to horse betting fans who wanted to see Big Brown and Curlin matchup in the Breeders’ Cup classic.

“We are disappointed that Big Brown will not be able to compete in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic but are glad to hear that he is expected to make a full recovery from the injury he sustained earlier today,” Breeders’ Cup president and chief executive officer Greg Avioli said.

Big Brown is to stand at stud at Robert Clay’s Three Chimney’s farm for the 2009 breeding season.

Zarkava became the first three-year-old filly since Akiyda in 1982 to win Europe’s richest race, the four million euro Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, at Longchamp on Sunday. The brilliant three-year-old boosted her claims with a devastating success in the Prix Vermeille three weeks ago, extending her unbeaten run to six races.

Zarkava, trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre and ridden by Christophe Soumillon, ran about 1-½ miles on good-to-soft turf in 2 minutes, 28-4/5 seconds to defeat 15 male opponents in the Group I race. She returned $6 for a $2 win wager to U.S. simulcast horse bettors.

Championships for fillies and mares are happening on Friday, the first ever Breeders Cup Ladies Day. Saturday’s card features the main event, the Breeders Cup Classic, which is setting up to pit Horse of the Year Curlin and Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown against each other.
