Rags to Riches outdueled Preakness winner Curlin in a breathtaking stretch run and won the Belmont Stakes by a head last year, becoming the first of her sex in 102 years to take the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Rags to Riches became the third filly to capture the Belmont. Ruthless took the first running in 1867 and Tanya won in 1905. Only 22 fillies have tried the Belmont, with Rags to Riches the first since Silverbulletday finished seventh in 1999.

The filly Rags to Riches’ photo-finish victory over Curlin was voted “2007 NTRA Moment of the Year” with 51 percent of votes cast, followed by death of Barbaro (17 percent), which occurred year ago Jan. 29., and Curlin’s victory in Breeders’ Cup Classic to clinch Horse of Year (10 percent).

Rags to Riches retired in March 2008 after aggravating a hairline right front leg fracture suffered September 2007.
