Big Brown Wins Florida Derby 2008

Post-time favorite Big Brown blew the field away to capture Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. The time for the 1 1/8 mile race was 1:48.16.

Two years ago Barbaro followed his close win in the Florida Derby with an impressive victory in the Kentucky Derby.

Curlin Wins 2008 Dubai World Cup

As all we expected, Curlin won the Dubai World Cup. The four-year-old Curlin, the world’s highest rated horse, was ridden by Robby Albarado and trained by Steve Asmussen.

Dubai World Cup is only 3 days away and for the first time in its 12 year history, tickets for the World Cup Festival at Nad Al Sheba are sold out in advance.

Big Glen and Adriano on KY Derby trails

There were 2 Kentucky derby prep races last Sunday at Turfway Park - Rushaway Stakes and Lane’s End Stakes. Here are the payouts,winners, and videos of each race.

Big Glen, trained by Frank Brothers, ridden by Rene Douglas, defeated favored Miner’s Claim and won the $100,000 Rushaway Stakes.

Update on Street Sense, 2007 Kentucky Derby Winner

Anybody curious what Street Sense is doing today? After Street Sense, the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner, finished the 4th in 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Monmouth Park, he retired to stud duty with earnings of $4,383,200. He stands at Darley’s Jonabell Farm near Lexington, Kentucky with a stud fee of $75,000 in 2008. Hard Spun, the second finisher in KY Derby last year is in the same farm with a stud fee for $50,000. Singspiel, the Dubai World Cup winner is also at the farm.

Dubai World Cup 2008

There will be one big race before Kentucky Derby. It is Dubai World Cup. Dubai World Cup is the riches horse race in the world with a purse of $6 million to the winner. This year, the Dubai World Cup meeting on March 29, 2008, comprises of seven races of varying purses, totalling a staggering $21.25 million.

Chief supporting races are the $5 million Dubai Duty Free and the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic. Also on the card are the Dubai Golden Shaheen and UAE Derby, both worth $2 million, and the $1 million Godolphin Mile, while the evening kicks off with the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians.

Curlin
, the 2007 Horse of the Year, is expected to take on a dozen contenders in this year. Curlin won a $175,000 Jaguar Trophy here in preparation for the Saturday, March 29 race.

The final field for the Dubai World Cup will be declared on Monday, March 24 with the post position draw taking place two days later.

Kentucky Derby Preps: Pyro Wins Louisiana Derby

There were 3 derby preps last weekend and here are the payouts and results.

Louisiana Derby
As expected, Pyro won Louisiana Derby easily. The victory not only reaffirmed Pyro’s status as a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby, it made trainer Steve Asmussen breathe easier knowing his 3-year-old colt won with plenty to spare. Pyro’s latest win simply reaffirmed his status as a top Kentucky Derby contender, but undefeated War Pass remains No. 1 in the latest Associated Press’ Run to the Roses’ Top 10 list. Pyro, who won the Risen Star with a last-to-first stretch run Feb. 9, stays No. 2 with all three of his losses coming last year against undefeated War Pass.

El Camino Real Derby
Autism Awareness stormed onto the Derby scene with a stunning win in the El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows at odds of 62-1. The colt was 0-for-12 before breaking his maiden in the race before the El Camino Real.

Shame Stakes
Colonel John, ridden by Garrett Gomez, won by a half-length, with the previously unbeaten El Gato Malo finishing three lengths in front of third-place Victory Pete. Reflect Times was fourth, and Success Fee trailed in the field of five. Coast Guard and Trevor’s Clever were scratched.

The Louisiana Derby Post Position and Odds

The Louisiana Derby is run at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana this Saturday. Raced at 1⅛ miles until 1988, two winners of the Louisiana Derby have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby: Black Gold in 1924, and Grindstone in 1996. The 1988 winner, Risen Star went on to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

Pyro, winner of the Risen Star Stakes here nearly a month ago, was installed Monday as the early favorite in a nine-horse field for the Louisiana Derby.

In the 95th running of the Louisiana Derby, a $600,000 Grade 2 stakes race for 3-year-olds, the field, in order of post position, is:
